Position Summary
The Process Engineer is responsible for optimizing melting, metal recovery, and processing operations to improve throughput, reduce melt loss, and stabilize furnace performance. This role works directly on the floor with operations, maintenance, and leadership to identify process constraints, eliminate variability, and drive measurable improvements in safety, cost, and productivity.
This is a hands-on role accountable for improving daily performance.
Key Responsibilities
Furnace Process Optimization
– Monitor and improve melt rate vs. consumption balance
– Identify constraints related to BTU limits, charging practices, bath levels, and temperature control
– Develop standardized charging strategies
– Reduce temperature swings impacting casting stability
– Improve furnace utilization and uptime
Melt Loss & Yield Improvement
– Track and analyze melt loss and dross generation
– Identify root causes of oxidation and metal loss
– Drive yield improvement initiatives
Dross Processing & Metal Recovery
– Optimize dross handling and processing
– Improve metal recovery rates
– Establish standards to minimize loss
Process Stability & Standardization
– Develop SOPs for charging, skimming, and transitions
– Reduce variability between shifts and operators
Data, Metrics & Reporting
– Track melt rate, consumption, yield, and dross %
– Analyze performance gaps and report findings
Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement
– Lead root cause analysis on process issues
– Drive measurable improvement projects
Cross-Functional Collaboration
– Work with operations, maintenance, metallurgy, and scrap purchasing
Safety & Compliance
– Ensure safe handling of molten metal and dross
– Support environmental compliance and audits
